With the recent October launch (finally) of ATi's X1800 XT/XL high-end graphic card series, ATi finally has a worthy contender to counter against nVIDIA's GeForce 7800 GTX/GT (which launched back in June & August respectively)/ While late, the new X1800 XT/XL cards seem to match decently against the GeForce 7800 GTX/GT cards (not counting SLI, of course ). However, it looks like nVIDIA had a secret weapon waiting around the corner to counter against the X1800 XT:
Say hello to the GeForce 7800 GTX 512 MB.
Unlike the previously released GeForce 7800 GTX 256 MB (which was clocked at 430 MHz /1200 MHz), this new GTX model not only has 512 MB, but it's also clocked at an insane 580 MHz / 1730 MHz! No wonder it needs such a beefy cooling heatsink/fan.
The card is not officially launched yet (official date is Monday, November 14), but apparently, there are some stores, like mwave.com, that are already selling the card, but at "way over MSRP, rip-off" prices (common when high-end graphic cards launch with limited quantity) . Anyhow, Uberhunter of NVNews Forums was able to get his hands on one. This is what he had to say about the new card:
Uberhunter:
OK...installed the new drivers 81.89 and everything installed smoothly. 3dmark ran perfect and here is the scores Stock. Going to run Fear stock then ill post the results. After that...gonna Overclock it and see if i can break 10k.

Almost 10,000 3DMark05 points! And yes, this is at stock speeds and 1 card running (not SLI). In comparison, the GeForce 7800 GTX 256 MB (at stock speeds) gets around 7500-8000 3DMark05 points. With some slight OCing, the GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB could break 10,000 3DMark05 points! Looks like Futuremark will have to release 3DMark06 soon, given their promise of releasing a new 3DMark whenever a single graphic card breaks 10,000 points. Also in the same thread, Uberhunter also posted some benchmarks of the new F.E.A.R. game as well.
Looks like ATi lost this year's graphic card war, first with the late, delayed launch of the X1xxx series, lackluster performance of the X1300 and X1600 parts vs. nVIDIA's current low-end and mid-end parts, limited availablity of the X1xxx series, barely (none?) any availablity of Crossfire motherboards & cards, and now, losing the high-end graphics card performance lead against the upcoming GeForce 7800 GTX 512 MB. However, I'll wait for official reviews of the card to come out on Monday before passing final judgement between the X1800 XT 512MB and the GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB. But it's looking like the GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB will give the X1800 XT a beat-down.
Man, I really need to switch to PCI-Express.
