Suikoden V is finally out in the U.S.! I just picked up this game yesterday. I'm pretty surprised how fast Suikoden V came out, considering this game was only released in Japan about a month ago.
So far, I've played about 5 hours into it so far. One thing I can definately say about this Suikoden is that it plays (and looks) very similar to the style found in Suikoden I and II.
- Takes place before Suikoden I, so several characters from Suikoden I, II, III will make their apperances here. - Return of 6-member parties. - Return of the S, M, L range system from Suikoden I & II. - Isomorphic battle view (like Suikoden I & II) - Isomorphic camera angles in areas - Return of Skill system (from Suikoden III) - Speech dialogue present in cut-scenes (like Suikoden IV) - No loading save files from previous Suikoden games.
My only nitpicks about the game is that unlike Suikoden III & IV, there is no free-camera viewing. Most of the places have fixed, isomorphic camera views. This is somewhat annoying, especially if you are now used to playing RPGs with free-style camera viewing angles.
Another nitpick I have is that the beginning is somewhat slow; there is somewhat too much emphasis on "touring around an area to activate the next quest." Despite these small setbacks, I can say that this game is already more enjoyable than Suikoden IV.

Yeah, I will agree with the slow beginning and I'm 10 hour into it and I'm finally past the prologue part. So far I really like the game and I'm torn between Suikoden II (that you lent me) and Suikoden V. I'm really enjoying the battle system with the different formation.

After the TES IV: Oblivion euphoria wore off (finally), I went back to playing Suikoden V. I can say this: this Suikoden is easily one of the best Suikoden games out of the series, rivalling Suikoden II for the top spot and outshines Suikoden I, III, and IV. Suikoden V's plot and storyline is great, but I think I still like the dark/serious tone of Suikoden II's plot/storyline more. However, I really like Suikoden V's character development; many of the characters in SV are well developed and easily outshines all other Suikodens (including Suikoden II) in this part.

I'm glad your liking the game Mike. I'm 59 hours into the game and I'm at the final dungeon. Good Luck.
