Since there's a favorite RPG thread, we should also ask the opposite question: what's the worst RPG you played, and why? The worst RPG I have ever played is Beyond the Beyond for PlayStation. Beyond the Beyond was the first real PlayStation RPG released in the U.S. Back then when PS1 came out, SCEA (Sony's U.S. PlayStation division) had an anti-RPG attitude, so there weren't many RPGs out back then. For some reason, this game was given approval for release in the U.S. by Sony. Since this was the only RPG for PS1 out at the time and I was looking for more RPGs to play, I picked up this game. Bad mistake. I can't really say anything good about this game. The storyline was extremely dull, characters were not interesting, gameplay was boring as hell, and the graphics weren't that impressive either. Given all of this, I still played through the entire game. After beating the game (which had a crappy ending BTW), I took the game to Funcoland and sold it. What a waste of time.

LOL, I read the topic of this thread, and instantly thought of beyond the beyond for the PS1. I came in to post it, but you pretty much summed up what was wrong with it. XD I was very surprised to see this was the exact game you posted about because I haven't thought about the game in forever, and I just randomly remembered it when seeing the name of this thread. lol

I dunno about PS RPGs, I've never had a PS. I think the worst I've played is Lunar: Dragon Song for the DS. The storyline and characters were ok, just a lottle on the dull side. The combat mechanics were horrible though. And that save bug >.< ... *shivers* That game was so bad I had to finish it after I had my wisdom teeth taken out and I was on the "little red pill" painkillers. I probably could've been entertained by drying paint while I was on those.
The battle exp and money collection systems were weird and annoying. Outside of battle, you could switch modes between "holy"(or something like that) and normal modes. In one mode you get no items from combat, but you get exp. In the other you get only items, you never get money from combat--ever. If you killed all the wandering monster parties in a given area, you got a special treasure (the only fun part). If you only fought monsters for exp and killed everything in the area (for the prize) you'd level at about the right rate to go through the game at a normal pace. Unfortunately, if you did that you'd end up with no money and very little equipment. you had to go back through the areas getting random monster drops (but no exp) for money earning "delivery quests". Making money in that game was almost as bad as RO.
The combat system itself was even worse. You couldn't target attacks (you hit "attack" and the character pickas a target) and the character balance was all funky. 99% of the battles could be fought using only attack. Fortunately there was an auto battle and fast-forward function (all characters attack and the battle moves at x4 speed). The character balance irritated me too. no matter how powerful all the other characters got, the main character did what they did better (the only thing he coudn't do was heal). He did massive melee damage, had the highest defense, and had the most powerful magic spells. It was annoying how much he did compared to everyone else. Thanks to the auto-targeting thing he often ended up killing everything himself.
