ok, yeah. I don't think bujin has really described spellcasting yet. It's very different from the way video games handle it, and it seems bizzare till you get used to it. I'll describe the method all the base classes use...
All spells have a level, which describes how powerful the spell is. The levels go from 0(basic) to 9(mega powerful). Each spellcasting class gets "spell slots" at for each level of spell. The slots are used to prepare or cast spells depending on the class. It's very different from the videogame "mp/sp/*whatever*p system. You may cast all of your powerful spells for the day, and still have 7 level 1 spell slots left, but you can't combine them or anything to cast a more powerful spell. (You can use a high level slot to cast a low level spell though, it wastes a bit of magic energy though.)
Wizards have a spellbook. They "learn" new spells by copying them into their book from scrolls or other spellbooks. Every morning (or after resting sometime) they spend an hour studying their spellbook to memorize the spells they want to prepare. Wizards fill their spell slots with any spells they have written in their spellbook. Once a spell is prepared, the wizard can cast it once (he can prepare it more than once to cast it more than once). Once a spell slot is prepared or cast, a wizard has to rest for 8 hours before preparing another spell in that slot.
Sorcerers have no spellbook, they simply learn spells. Unfortunately, this makes sorcerers more limited in their spell use. The make up for it by having more spells per day than the wizard, and having the ability to cast them spontaneously. Sorcerers must spend an hour meditating after resting to prepare their mind for spellcasting that day. After that, they can cast any spell they know without preparing it ahead of time (assuming they have a spell slot of a high enough level left).
Blech... bored. I'm gonna paraphrase more from here.
Bards are exactly like sorcerers, except that they only need to spend 15 minutes playing or singing in the morning to ready their spell slots.
Clerics, Druids, Paladins and Rangers prepare spells like a wizard, except that they can prepare any spell on their spell list (no known spells or spellbooks, they get them all). The other difference is that These classes don't need rest to prepare spells. They prepare spells at a specific hour each day (usually a time important to their deity).
Oh yeah, a good familiar. That'd depend on your preference. Tell me what you wanna do and what kind of animal you might like as a familiar and I'll see what I can do. (I recommend a cat because cats just pwn ^_^)
