For those that are still using Windows XP, Microsoft has officially announced that Service Pack 3 for Windows XP has reached RTM (final), two days ago. More details below:
A list of changes in Windows XP Service Pack 3 can be found at Paul Thurott's website: www.winsupersite.com/faq/xp_sp3.asp
Although XP SP3 RTM was released to manufacturers, it hasn't been made available to regular users, until now. I have finished downloading XP SP3 RTM (the real thing, build 5512) and have put it up on my personal webspace. You can download Windows XP SP3 RTM 5512 here: www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5b33b5a8-5e76-401f-be08-1e1555d4f3d4&DisplayLang=en
Please note that if you are using custom XP icons and XP themes, you may want to wait for an updated, hacked uxtheme.dll patcher for SP3, since installing SP3 will likely disable custom icons and themes. Also, if you're using major customization packs like Vista Transformation Pack, it probably won't work right with SP3; best thing to do is wait for an SP3-compatible pack to come out.
EDIT:
I have it installed on my laptop (running XP Professional) and it seems to be running fine so far. No noticeable differences over SP2.
EDIT 2: Link is working again, after some downtime.
EDIT 3: Microsoft has officially released Windows XP Service Pack 3. You can grab it from Microsoft's website here: www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5b33b5a8-5e76-401f-be08-1e1555d4f3d4&DisplayLang=en
Note that this is exactly the same as the SP3 posted earlier. It's just that MS is now making SP3 available to everyone.
Today we are happy to announce that Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) has released to manufacturing (RTM). Windows XP SP3 bits are now working their way through our manufacturing channels to be available to OEM and Enterprise customers.
We are also in the final stages of preparing for release to the web (i.e. you!) on April 29th, via Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Center. Online documentation for Windows XP SP3, such as Microsoft Knowledge Base articles and the Microsoft TechNet Windows XP TechCenter, will be updated then. For customers who use Windows XP at home, Windows XP SP3 Automatic Update distribution for users at home will begin in early summer.
Thanks to everyone here who installed the public betas – you not only gave us detailed feedback but also helped each other out with timely troubleshooting. Through the beta program we found several important issues and were able to confirm some essential fixes. We couldn’t have done this without you.
We will still be monitoring this forum during the next few weeks in case you have more feedback about the release of Windows XP SP3.
On behalf of myself, Shashank Bansal and Windows Serviceability, many thanks.
