Angie, is your dad and brother pretty sure it's a virus? It sounds like it could potentially be a hardware problem too. Perhaps maybe a part went bad or is dying, and is causing your computer to be unstable. There is a way to test if your hardware is bad. You can try using Memtest86+ to see if this is the case, but it might be a little too complicated to use. Anyhow, the site is here: www.memtest.org/Otherwise, if you are pretty certain it is a virus, try using Kaspersky's free online virus scan here: www.kaspersky.com/virusscannerC-Net has done several virus scanner comparisons and Kaspersky Anti-Virus has always come out on top, with the highest virus detection rate.

Hmm, I guess it might be some sort of software/driver/virus issue then... Have you tried disabling all startup items? You could also try downloading Crap Cleaner at www.ccleaner.com. It's an effective utility that can clean up a lot of junk on computers; you can also use it to disable startup items pretty easily. In that program, if you go to Tools button, then select 'Startup', it'll show you a list of programs that start up when Windows runs. Try disabling programs that look unfamiliar to you.

Why not just reformat and reload the comp from scratch?..Since uve determined its not a hardware problem, y dont u reformat the comp and reload windows or whatever..as long as u take backups of ur data

Why not just reformat and reload the comp from scratch? Sure that's an option, but it's kinda like going hunting with a tank...

Hmm, you already did a reformat and the same problem is happening? It sounds more like a hardware issue than a virus, since a hard drive format erases all data on the hard drive, along with any virus programs. There's also the possibility of boot virus, but those are extremely uncommon and rarely used.
